The Impact of Nonprofit Organizations in St. Louis, Missouri on Animal Welfare and Conservation

The Missouri Humane Society is a non-profit animal welfare organization that is devoted to the prevention of animal cruelty, abuse, and neglect. The Center for Animal Rescue and Enrichment of St. Louis, or CARE STL, is a charitable organization based on the 501c3 model that works in collaboration with the City of St. Louis to implement Title 10 of the City of San Luis Ordinance, which relates to the care and control of animals.

This organization follows the no-kill equation and adheres to the guiding principles of no-kill shelters. It was observed that while there were many organizations that provided assistance to people in need of food, clothing, and housing, no attention was being paid to a particular family member: the family pet. This led to the establishment of the Missouri Pet Fund, a 501 (c), 3 non-profit organization with the purpose of establishing programs and policies that reduce the number of unwanted dogs and cats being euthanized in Saint Louis every year. Founded by Ella Megginson, of Webster Groves, in 1922, MPF is 55 years old and was established by citizens concerned about the rapid disappearance of the Missouri prairies. CARE STL is devoted to saving animals in danger, whose lives are at risk in animal shelters with high mortality rates. 26% of animal controls, those that are stray animals, have been abandoned or the owner surrenders, regardless of size or breed.

This organization focuses on creating exceptional communities and partnerships, resulting in progressive changes in conservation programs. The Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation is a 501 (c) non-profit organization founded in 1997 to promote the conservation and appreciation of Missouri's natural resources, including fish, forests and wildlife. This foundation awards an individual who reflects the spirit of conservation, demonstrates outstanding leadership, and has positively contributed to conservation principles and programs in Missouri. Simone (my first dog) and I volunteered for 7 years as a team of therapy dogs at this organization. He has been a member of the board of directors of the Missouri Conservation Heritage Foundation and of American Rivers in Washington, D. C.
